OUR WHY
At the heart of the NEPA Invitational lies a deep commitment to our community and the spirit of giving back. Founded by professional golfer and NEPA native Brandon Matthews, the tournament exists to support children's health initiatives and foster the growth of golf at all levels.

The NEPA Invitational was born from a desire to make a meaningful impact—on the game of golf, and on the lives of children and families in need.
Since its founding, the tournament has grown into more than just a competition. It’s a celebration of community, philanthropy, and Northeast Pennsylvania pride.
In 2021, we lost Mr. William Lawler, a beloved figure and tireless supporter of junior golf. In his memory, The Lawler Scholarship Fund was created to provide opportunities for deserving young golfers across the region.
Through a partnership with the Scranton Area Community Foundation, we’ve also expanded our reach—supporting a wide range of local charitable organizations that serve our community.
HISTORY & PURPOSE

We are proud to support Janet Weis Children’s Hospital | Geisinger, a member of the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals and a designated Play Yellow Hospital.
Funds raised through the NEPA Invitational help ensure that pediatric patients receive world-class care—right here in Northeast Pennsylvania.
OUR BENEFICIARY

Brandon Matthews, a proud native of Northeast Pennsylvania, has never forgotten where he came from. Now a PGA TOUR professional, Brandon’s journey began right here—and his success has only deepened his passion for giving back.
Driven by a desire to support others the way he was supported, Brandon founded the NEPA Invitational to make a meaningful impact both on and off the course. He serves as a mentor to young athletes, a champion for children’s health, and a leader in uniting golf with purpose.
What started as a hometown vision has grown into a powerful platform for change—one swing, one scholarship, and one story at a time.
MEET THE FOUNDER
The Play Yellow Initiative
The Play Yellow campaign, inspired by Jack and Barbara Nicklaus, unites the golf community in support of children’s hospitals nationwide. We are honored to be part of this initiative, amplifying our impact and joining others in the game for a cause that goes far beyond the course.
In October 2023, our founder Brandon Matthews was recognized as the Play Yellow Ambassador of the Year at the annual Play Yellow Invitational in West Palm Beach, Florida. This prestigious award, presented by Jack and Barbara Nicklaus in collaboration with the PGA TOUR and Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals, honors individuals who have made a meaningful contribution to pediatric healthcare through golf.
Brandon’s dedication to this mission is at the heart of the NEPA Invitational—and this recognition is a testament to the power of purpose-driven play.
